The purpose of genius hour (also known as 20% time or Fed Ex) is to allow children the chance to study something they are passionate about. It allows students to choose their own project and learning outcomes, while still working on the skills and standards of the grade level. It gives the students a purpose for learning and encourages creativity. There are no deadlines, just adult facilitators making sure they children are on-task. Research will take place over many weeks before students find a way to put all their information together for a formal presentation. Once the students present, they move on to their next passion-driven project.
How do they do it? Students write an open-ended question of something they are passionate about. Next, they write 8-10 guiding questions to get them there. Then, the students create a plan of what and how they are going to research. Finally, the students find a creative way to present their new findings.
